#7 Album of 2009: Phoenix

Phoenix has been a favorite of mine ever since Alphabetical came out, but each album has had to take a bit of time to grow on me. Once it does I can't figure out exactly why this is, because they are always damn good. Their newest album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is no exception.

The best thing about Phoenix is for other bands often a detriment. They know their sound and stick safely to it. When they deviate off the sameness path it is only a few small steps.

Listening back through the last few albums, there's not a lot of growth. Typically this would put me off; I like to hear a band evolve over time. But Phoenix is so good at what they do (being poppy and completely un-annoying) that I always welcome more of the same.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is exactly what I expect from the band... a high energy, fun, memorable album. With the exception of one instrumental that is just a tad too long, everything on this disk is top notch.
