And the #1 Album of 2009 is...
Nervous Neal Smith's Manhandle Suite!!!
Seriously, this was my absolute favorite album of 2009. And lucky for you, the whole thing is available for free online! Let's talk about it a bit, as you probably have no idea what I'm talking about.
"Walkin'" by Nervous Neal Smith

Manhandle Suite
Nervous Neal Smith
The only reason I know about Nervous Neal is the RPM Challenge. In fact, one of the only good things about said project are these diamonds in the rough. And there is a lot of rough.
A few things you don't hear much of in a short-term project from a community that is, in the majority, comprised of amateurs and hobbyists:
- Jazz
- Innovative Jazz
- Fun Jazz
- People Who Play Their Instruments REALLY Well
- Amazing Modesty
Manhandle Suite has all of this in droves. Neal used percussion tracks from a 1958 accompaniment album, but played everything else himself, and it's no small feat. Great melodies, really well-structured songs, and earfuls of fun.
This is what I need more of: fun music. In fact, if you look at all ten albums in this list, I think that's what you'll find. People having a good time making music.
This is music that inspired me in 2009... only a small selection of some of my favorite music. There was so much more that came out this year that ruled... so much that I've yet to hear. Looking toward 2010, I have no idea what sort of music will catch my ear, but I'm excited to find out.
Have a Happy New Year, everyone. And for goodness sake, go get Manhandle Suite for free right here!
